Independent effects of collocation strength and contextual predictability on eye movements in reading

چکیده

Collocations are commonly co-occurring word pairs, such as “black coffee”. Previous research has demonstrated a processing advantage for collocations compared to novel phrases, suggesting that readers sensitive the frequency words co-occur in phrases. However, further question concerns whether this occurs independently from effects of contextual predictability. We examined issue an eye movement experiment using adjective-noun pairs strong (e.g., coffee”) or weak “bitter coffee”), based on co-occurrence statistics. These were presented sentences where shared concept they expressed coffee) was predictable unpredictable prior sentence context. observed clear collocation strength, with shorter reading times collocations. Moreover, these occurred The findings therefore provide evidence is not driven by expectations.

Effects of contextual predictability and transitional probability on eye movements during reading.

In 2 eye-movement experiments, the authors tested whether transitional probability (the statistical likelihood that a word precedes or follows another word) affects reading times and whether this occurs independently from contextual predictability effects. Experiment 1 showed early effects of predictability, replicating S. A. McDonald and R. C. Shillcock's (2003a) finding that words with a high...

The influence of contextual diversity on eye movements in reading.

Recent research has shown contextual diversity (i.e., the number of passages in which a given word appears) to be a reliable predictor of word processing difficulty. It has also been demonstrated that word-frequency has little or no effect on word recognition speed when accounting for contextual diversity in isolated word processing tasks. An eye-movement experiment was conducted wherein the ef...

Contextual effects on smooth-pursuit eye movements.

Segregating a moving object from its visual context is particularly relevant for the control of smooth-pursuit eye movements. We examined the interaction between a moving object and a stationary or moving visual context to determine the role of the context motion signal in driving pursuit. Eye movements were recorded from human observers to a medium-contrast Gaussian dot that moved horizontally...

Eye movements and word skipping during reading: effects of word length and predictability.

Eye movements were monitored as subjects read sentences containing high- or low-predictable target words. The extent to which target words were predictable from prior context was varied: Half of the target words were predictable, and the other half were unpredictable. In addition, the length of the target word varied: The target words were short (4-6 letters), medium (7-9 letters), or long (10-...

the effects of cooperative versus individual directed reading thinking activities on students inferential and referential questions

two groups of students were assigned as experimental and control ones, and were given instruction on directed reading-thinking activities and after some treatment, they were post-tested. although the initial pre-test did not show any significant differences, the final post-test result revealed that the cooperative reading comprehension helped the experimental group. the cooperative students’...
